My journey of wearing wigs

My journey of wearing wigs

alopecia wig

My journey of wearing wigs started at the age of six in 1967, and the thought of going to a NHS wig maker stays in my memory as if it were yesterday.

My Wig Journey

Doctors and specialists never knew what caused my alopecia and many reasons have been given over the years. Believe me, in those days, wigs were not like they are today, you had little choice of style or colour, the netting was thick and if the wind blew a little bald head was seen. Children and adults could not resist making comments about my wig. I carried on wearing many wigs until my hair fully recovered aged fourteen. I received relatively little trouble until at 41, a traumatic event meant the dreaded alopecia returned. The reality hit one day when I was looking at some holiday photos; wearing hats and scarves did not disguise the fact that alopecia had won.

I tried several different wigs from different companies before I found Simply Wigs. The relief of finding a company where staff know their product line and give sensible and helpful advice freely, was immense. I have bought many synthetic wigs from Simply Wigs, either by telephone or online. The synthetics are stylish, colours are great, and the range is extensive at reasonable prices. Recently, I have started wearing Human Hair wigs. The reason I wanted to try the Gisela Mayer Human Hair Luxury Lace C wig in Sunshine Gold was to have a wig which I could style – one day straight another day curl – just like I used to do with my own hair. Gosh, I was so happy and thrilled. I have found it’s sensational!

All the photos on my post show the wigs straight out of the box on to my head with just a bit of brushing. It’s beautifully light weight and the density is just right. After using heat protection spray (which the girls at Simply Wigs are only to happy to give advice on), I straightened the front section to create a fringe. I asked my husband (who has a very straight eye!) to cut the hair. It is better to cut several times rather than cut too much off the first time. I took off some of the length too, which in hindsight I would have left on, because all I needed was a few days to get used to it. The following week, I decided to purchase another in this style, this time in Gold Blonde (the two colours are very similar). I left the second wig at the original length and only cut in a fringe. I curl one into a long bob, and the other I keep straight, so I can change my hair style without constantly using heated hair-stylers.

alopecia wig happy

To say I’m happy is an understatement. I receive comments on a regular basis that my hair colour is fabulous. I have only received good comments which makes me feel great.
Would I buy again?
Yes!

  1. Not much fun going through all of that as a tender little girl, but look at you now!

You had to be a brave person to arrive at this point, looking as if you are relaxed and having fun. Many hurdles jumped and bridges crossed, I think.

You look very much younger than you are and your choice of wig is the perfect style and colour for you. I love your look.

Thank you for publishing your story. There may be many Mums who will read it, with their cherished children, gaining hope for a lovely life, even when present circumstances seem so daunting

    Love and hugs,

  4. Hi,
I would never have guessed you wear a wig on last pictures. Very nice and natural style you have! I am about the same age and do like long wigs in spite of the fact that general opinion stands for short wigs be best for middle aged..here in my country.
    Best regards.
