I didn’t know why I was losing my hair

SW Team says, sometimes it can be hard work to find a wig that you are happy with. There are so many choices, so many colours and so many styles to choose from. But like Sheila, just persevere and you will find the one for you. And remember – if you are struggling to find that perfect choice you can easily contact one of our experts to help you make the correct decision.

THE START

When my wig journey started I didn’t know why I was losing my hair, it had been a gradual loss and I still don’t know what happened to make it disappear, I just hoped that it would grow again and I would not need to wear a wig.

THE UPSET

Unfortunately, I finally had to accept that my hair was not going to grow and I was going to have to wear a hat all the time or take the plunge and buy a wig.

THE SEARCH

I read all I could about what kind of wig would be best for me, my own hair had been fine and light blonde colour so the colour was my starting point and having found the Simply Wigs website I found what I thought would be the best wig for me. I awaited delivery of my first wig with hopes that my problems were over and I could go out again without being embarrassed if someone stared at my bald head. So, I opened the box to see a lovely wig close to my natural colour, I thought ‘This is it – I found the one’ I put it on and looked in the mirror – and was totally shocked. To me I looked like I had this huge furry bush on my head – and I hated it.

THE SUPPORT

My husband however said it looked amazing and made me look much younger – I just couldn’t see what he could see but I persevered and wore the wig when we went out.

THE JOURNEY

Thus my journey to find the perfect wig started with the wigs I saw on Simply Wigs and they always looked exactly what I wanted – they looked lovely in the pictures, and when they arrived I put them on my wig stand and they looked lovely – but I put them on my head and they looked like a huge bush on me. No matter what I tried they looked the same when I put them on. I felt I might as well have a notice on my head saying ‘Yes, it’s a wig’.
I have tried so many wigs, short styles, cropped styles, and hand-tied. They all looked the same to me – I even found out that this phenomenon has a name – it’s called mushroom head (I hate mushrooms now).

THE FINAL CHOICE

Eventually, I got so despondent I decided that I would put all but one of the wigs I had bought back in their boxes and put them away.

But, I thought I would just try them on again just in case I was mistaken and I found one that looked really good. It came as a bit of a shock, and I now LOVE it!

Sheila

  1. Hello Carol
Finding the right volume wig for you is not an easy process as I have found. However I asked Simply Wigs for advice on this and they told me a wig that is completely hand tied is a good option. I have found that Ellen Wille wigs that are hand tied do not have too much volume. Also if there is any mention of permatease I know the wig may look lovely on the model but would look too full for me. I hope this is of help to you.
    Regards,
    Sheila

  2. It is really hard buying a wig for colour and shape, when you first try them on I always think they look odd but you really have to fiddle about with it . I’ve just bought one which I knew was too long but the colour was right so my hairdresser cut it for me and it’s perfect.

  3. There are various useful videos on how to thin out a wig (as long as it isn’t permatese ie, permanent backcomb for body). Hit youtube for thinning out a wig and do it carefully :), The horrible shine some have can make them look thick and fake too.

  4. My own story is almost identical to Sheila’s and so is my colouring, style and fine hair texture . I’d love know which wig she is wearing because I often feel my wigs are too thick to be believed for my age and I am on a quest to find the ideal weight .

  5. You felt your wig looked odd…too much hair…that is because you had got used to yourself without very much hair. I felt just as you did, the answer, keep wearing your wig, your mind will adjust.,

  6. Not a mushroom in sight! You look really good. No one would ever think it isn’t your natural hair, and the style really suits you. You are a real inspiration. In fact it was looking at your photo, and others who have shared, that made me decide to take the plunge and buy a wig myself, so thank you so much for sharing. I agree that simply wigs are the tops, too!

  7. Thank you Barbara. What made a difference with the way I saw myself in a wig was taking a photograph of myself wearing the wig. For some reason I look different/better in a photograph than I do looking in a mirror, and I have since seen a few comments on line from wig wearers that have found the same thing.

  8. The one you have on looks so good on you and, unless you knew differently, completely natural.
