My Wigs Gave Me My Freedom
What's In This Article
I’m Sarah. I have had androgenic alopecia since the age of 19. I’m now 52.
My hair loss was very slow and began to be more noticeable from my early 20s.
The Start Of My Hair Loss Journey
I increasingly avoided socialising, and I started wearing a baseball cap when things got bad. Alopecia had completely robbed me of my confidence and self-esteem. I tried everything to stop my hair loss, including a scalp biopsy, minoxidil, and even visiting a trichologist.
At the start of my journey of wearing alternative hair, I had a few setbacks, one of which was a topper that I couldn’t get on with and it pulled on all my hair that I had left. My hair was getting weaker and weaker, and the texture started to change, becoming more and more brittle and broke easily.
My First Wig Experiences
The first time I visited a wig shop I broke down in tears, but I did come away with a wig which I initially wore away from home or from people I knew. I was scared and embarrassed and back then there was little support or social media, so there was very little awareness. Eventually I plucked up enough courage to start wearing my wig full time and to work. I was so worried about how my colleagues would react, however it really wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated. Looking back, I wish I had worn wigs sooner. I struggled with thinning hair for up to ten years before I started wearing a wig!
Nowadays I embrace wearing wigs and enjoy wearing different wigs; they give me the freedom to change my image and have endless style options. Alternative hair has changed my life for the better. Wigs are a huge part of me and have given me back my confidence and femininity. I would never want anyone to struggle like I did.
Love, Sarah xx
