Synthetic wigs are cost-effective and easy to maintain, ideal for those new to wigs and those expanding their wig collections. If you’ve had the same synthetic wig for a while, you may be craving a change of style without buying a new one. While it is possible to cut a wig into a new style (see our previous post on how to cut a wig), you may be wondering, can you dye synthetic wigs? Please keep reading to discover what we recommend when it comes to dying synthetic hair.
Can you Use Hair Dye on Synthetic Wigs?
In short, dying synthetic hair isn’t recommended. Most home dye kits contain harsh chemicals that are highly likely to damage the fibres of your synthetic wig permanently. The last thing we’d recommend is investing in a good-quality synthetic wig only to spoil it!
However, if you’re set on dying a wig, why not choose a human hair wig and take it to a salon to have it professionally coloured? This is a lower risk approach to a much better outcome.
There are a variety of other ways to give your synthetic wig a new lease of life without causing irreparable damage. For example, many synthetic wigs come with a shiny finish which isn’t natural-looking enough for some wig-wearers. Removing the shine gives your synthetic wig a new but subtle look, and we’ve covered the best methods for achieving this in a recent blog post on how to remove the shine on a synthetic wig.
Taking care of your synthetic wig by using our top tips on wig care will keep it looking beautiful for longer without the need to colour it. While overhauling your wig care regime, it’s worth bearing in mind the wig care practices to avoid as well as those to include in your routine.
Here are some simple ways to breathe new life into your synthetic wig without the need to colour it yourself:
- Detangle gently and regularly using a detangling comb. This keeps your wig fibres from matting and prevents tangles when washing your wig. Comb gently, starting at the ends of the hair and slowly working your way towards the root. Avoid pulling harshly to prevent pulling the hair, and if you need help, read our blog post, which walks you through the five steps to untangle a synthetic wig.
- Using a specialist wig shampoo, add approximately one tablespoon to a sink of cold water and gently lower your wig into the water. Use your fingers to softly swill the wig around in the water, allowing the water to loosen any oil or sweat from the cap and hair fibres. Rinse the wig with clean cold water and blot with a towel. To keep the hair fibres intact, avoid wringing the wig.
- While the wig is still damp, gently work a small amount of wig conditioner through the wig, but be careful not to apply this to the wig cap. If you’d prefer, you could use a wig conditioning spray instead, spraying from 10 inches away from the wig. Again, rinse gently with fresh, cold water.
- Once you have blotted most of the water from the synthetic wig, hang it on your wig stand and allow it to air dry. If you’re in a hurry, you can use the cool setting on the hairdryer to accelerate the drying process, but be careful not to cause tangles.
- When your wig is dry, brush it gently with your detangling comb and start styling! By choosing the right styling products for synthetic wigs, you can explore different ways to wear your wig and unleash your creativity in a way that won’t harm your wig.
