Changing your wig style with confidence

Changing your wig style with confidence

Hands up, I’m not one of those super-confident ladies who can switch styles on a daily basis. That’s because although I don’t mind anyone knowing about my alopecia and wig, I don’t particularly seek out full disclosure with everyone. It’s not from embarrassment, more from not wanting to have ‘that’ conversation over and over again.

So, most of the time when I feel the need to freshen up my wig style I tend to go for something subtly different, which could easily be the result of a trip to the hairdressers. But every now and then we all want a proper change, and if we don’t face up to that sometimes we either stick with the same style forever or go a few millimetres shorter each time! And that would be no fun at all.

I have taken the plunge and switched to a slightly longer wig style with some lighter highlights around my face. I’m delighted with my new wig – Catwalk Deluxe from Gisela Mayer – and I’m enjoying playing with it. Don’t be alarmed if you’re unsure about the wisdom of your decision to change styles for the first few days, you need time to figure out how you like to style it and to tweak your makeup before you really settle into it.

In other words, don’t panic and lose your confidence.

One thing which happens when you change style is that lots of people say ‘Ooh, I like your hair‘. You should take this at face value and be pleased! They don’t mean ‘is that a wig?’, they mean ‘that looks really nice. It’s entirely up to you whether you take the opportunity to open up and tell them it’s a wig. My recent experience is that when I do so people generally say ‘wow, I’d never have guessed, it looks completely natural’, which is a lovely thing to hear. It’s easy to worry that it will be obvious you’re wearing a wig when you make a big change, but even if people do work it out they’ll still be positive and kind. After all, the fact you wear a wig doesn’t harm them in any way, and they might even be a little envious of how easily you can change from one gorgeous style to another.

To finish, if I’m feeling a bit nervous about a new style. These lyrics from the marvellous of Halestorm always help me walk tall:

Am I brave enough?
Am I strong enough?
To follow the desire
That burns from within
To push away my fear
To stand where I’m afraid
– – –
My flame is rising higher
I am the fire
I am burning brighter

Safe to say, after the success of my recent modest change I’m feeling that fire and I’ll be ready to be brave and go for a more dramatic change next time 🙂

Love from,

Lizzie xx

  1. I love Lizzie’s try ons and reports on different wigs
    – she has a very good manner which makes me feel more confident about my own situation.
Try to encourage her to do more .

  2. Problem with foundation staining, silver grey & snow 60’s shades. Also have you or any off your Customers, any recommendations for removal of same, without rubbing fibres when washing.
    Thanking you.

  3. Thanks Michelle! I’ve got a few more in the pipeline – once I started writing last weekend it was hard to stop! I was inspired to offer to blog after reading a couple of your brilliant recent articles, so thank you xxx

  4. Hello Dom

Good for you! I haven’t tried any semi permanent eyebrow solutions yet, how did you find the tattooing? I’m going to do a post on brow make up and false lashes soon, and maybe one day I’ll take the plunge and go for something more permanent for my eyebrows (after I’ve moved house; we live miles from anywhere at the moment!)

    Love Lizzie xx.

  5. Hello Lois

Yes, the range of images on this site is fantastic; it really shows how they understand what’s important when you’re looking for a new wig. I particularly like the ‘what’s inside’ feature as I’ve got really picky about cap construction now there are so many clever constructions available. I have the added issue of a small head, so petite sizes fit me better. My current wig is a bit big on me but it’s such a nice style it’s worth that compromise. One thing I really love about Catwalk Deluxe is that the lace front extends down in front of the ear tabs, so the hair there sits fully flat, especially if I use a little bit of wig tape.

To answer your question, the colour I’m wearing is Caramel Candy Root. I really like the way the highlights are concentrated towards the front.

    Love Lizzie xx

  6. It so great to read your blog, I’ve always felt the same about changing my wig, just want to blend in with everyone else. Slowly getting more adventurous, even had my eyebrows tattooed on.

  7. What colour are you wearing Lizzie ? It looks super on you. I’m always viewing styles, colours etc and find if l like the style it’s difficult with the colour and also not many in full mono? It’s not as easy as it appears ! I certainly appreciate the back and side view on this site.

  8. Hello Dawn, and thanks for your lovely comments. It’s so nice to hear of other people who were nervous but took the plunge, and how great you felt once you’d made the change. I love your pic on the site – the Madelyn looks great on you!

  9. Thanks Lizzie. I echo your ‘be brave and go for it’ approach. I was feeling ‘old’ this year for the first time (I have felt 22 for years…!), and I thought “now or never”! So I went from a short dark bob (always had similar style – variations on a theme for me too) to very long. I chose Madelyn by Amore (that’s me in the pic on the website!). I have your approach too, Lizzie, whether to let people know about my alopecia or not Some people know (possibly more now, but who cares!) but going long can easily be explained away by hair extensions these days. I was nervous to start with but had very positive reactions. I LOVE it. And – an acquaintance who did not know my age (I told them I had wanted a change because I felt old) said, “but early 40s isn’t old”! Oh how I loved them for that – I am 54!!
Wish I’d gone longer years ago!
