How to Deal with Hair Loss

How to Deal with Hair Loss

Experiencing hair loss impacts everyone differently, but can really impact your self-confidence and be a painful and emotional experience. However, despite how daunting it may feel at first, there are things to try that can help to slow down hair loss, and many ways of cushioning the blow and dealing with the situation. The following advice may help you deal with your hair loss.

Medical Treatment

If you start to notice hair loss, it’s best to seek medical advice as soon as possible – book an appointment with your local GP. Your doctor will want to find out why you are experiencing hair loss and therefore what treatment options are available. Because hair loss can be hereditary, they will likely talk through your family history to try and identify if your condition is hereditary. They may also ask you to fill in a questionnaire or keep track of how much hair you are losing, and may even take a blood test to identify any underlying medical condition that may be causing the hair loss.
There are various medications that can be prescribed to treat hair loss. Ranging from ointments to tablets, some medication helps hair regrowth and others target the slowing down of hair loss.
Your doctor can advise you on the medication that is right for you.

Let Yourself Feel the Emotions

Experiencing hair loss can be extremely challenging and can inject a lot of anxiety into those going through it. However, it’s important to be honest with your feelings and not to feel guilty about feeling down about it. Use your emotions in a rational way and explore all possible options out there in terms of causes, treatments, and ways of living with it.
Be confident in yourself and trust your emotions.

Seek Support

You spend so much time supporting your family and loved ones, and now it’s time to let them help you. Talking to people about your hair loss and the way you are feeling is a great help in coping with the situation. Keeping your feelings bottled up is extremely unhealthy and is likely to worsen the effect that hair loss has on you.
Never underestimate the power of emotional support.

Mental Health Professionals

Hair loss effects all individuals differently – some find it easier to accept and cope with, while others can become extremely anxious and struggle. If you’re constantly feeling low and sad, or if your appetite or sleep is being affected by these feelings, you should definitely consider talking to a professional. For women struggling to cope with hair loss, a professional can help you to rationalise the problem and your feelings. If you leave yourself without the right support, you could be at risk of experiencing further problems in terms of stress and accelerated hair loss.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Consider Buying a Wig

For so many women, investing in a wig can restore confidence and make them feel like themselves again. Wigs are now so advanced that there are unlimited options available, meaning that there is a fabulous style to suit each woman. But you don’t have to experiment with a new style if you don’t want to – choose a wig that closely matches your own hair, and you can even have your hairdresser cut it to a different style. This way, you can still express your personal style through hair. For those with partial hair loss, investing in a full wig isn’t the only option – there are various hair pieces that can hide particular areas of hair loss and thinning.

your hair loss
does not define you

No matter the extent of hair loss you are experiencing, you are still you! You can still do the things you enjoy and wear the things you love – don’t let it stop you from living your life. Making sure that you are utilising the support around you and investing in a wig or hair piece if you wish to hide the hair loss, are important steps to take in being able to deal with hair loss.

We have many bloggers in our Simply Wigs community that talk through their experiences. Keep up to date with our blog for empowering stories and advice!

  1. Hi Liz, sorry to hear about your loss. It does put things into perspective and i do believe the more people talk about hair loss the better. It helps people realise that you are not on your own and that there are lots of wig wearers out there, its just they are so good these days nobody can tell !

  2. Hi Marilyn, thank you for your comments.
We do recommend you use a shampoo specially formulated for fibre hair as this will help keep the hair piece in tip top condition.

  3. Thank you for sharing your experiences. My hair also started thinning when my brother died. It was very distressing to get a brush full of hair, every day. Getting old is no fun so any help to make us feel better is great. I need to put my hair up because of the hot summer and lov the volume the hair piece gives. The only problem has been choosing the best suited colours but very happy with my purchase. I dont have any hair power shampoo and not sure what to use instead. The choccie was a nice surprise

  4. My hair started thinning badly when my husband died and my mum followed dying with dementia and then close friends passed away i decided not to dwell on hair loss as it seemed to be a minor complaint i was still alive i have 5 wigs all different styles and colours i also tell people when they say your hairlooks nice it’s a wig they are amazed
