Experiencing unusual rates of hair loss can be extremely distressing for anyone. It can leave you feeling stressed and confused, wondering how and why this is happening to you. To help you recognise if you have a normal or an excessive rate of hair loss, we have put together some advice and information on the subject of hair loss and the next steps to take in your hair loss journey.
How much hair loss is normal?
It’s important to remember that hair loss rate is different for every individual and the reasons behind this can vary too. As a general guide, people can lose up to 100 hairs a day which is classed as a perfectly normal rate of hair loss. With over 100,000 hair follicles in each person’s head, you can see why 100 doesn’t seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things.
Of course no one has the time to sit and count how many strands of hair fall out each time, but it gives you a good idea of the rate that is considered an average if you should wish to compare.
What could be affecting my hair loss?
If you appear to be shedding more hair then usual (only you can know what feels excessive for you) or you notice more hair appearing in the shower, on your pillow or maybe even when you just run your fingers through it, this can be from a number of reasons:
Hair styling could be one of the reasons you’re experiencing hair loss at the moment with approximately 40% of women losing extra hair every day. When styling or applying any treatment or colour to your natural hair, it’s important to remember that once your hair follicle had been split or stretched, the follicle is then broken which often results in the hair then falling out.
Excessive washing, bleaching, brushing and heat styling are included in this, so be careful and be mindful when styling your hair daily.
Hormonal changes can also be a big contributing factor to sudden and excessive hair loss. This includes both pregnancy and menopause where a hormonal imbalance can have a direct effect on how fast or slow your hair grows.
In addition, if you’ve recently been through a very stressful time or perhaps are experiencing one at the moment, this could be a contributor towards your increased rate of hair loss. If you would like to know more on the relationship between stress and hair loss, our recent blog post explores why stress related hair loss may occur and if it may grow back.
Should I contact a doctor?
If you’re still unsure about the cause of your hair loss or you are worried about the amount of hair you are losing, then we always advise that you seek medical advice. If you are experiencing bald spots, patchiness, or clumps of hair falling out, then contact your doctor directly for advice. We also have a comprehensive hair loss guide filled with lots of information on the different types of hair loss women experience and the medical terminology for each type.
