So, in an earlier post I answered a few questions that I always get asked by my friends and family.
Guess what? They have been asking me more!
How long will my wig last?
I always find this a difficult one to answer because for me it depends on a number of things. Firstly, I think the length and style of your wig can often impact how long you’re wig will last. For example, a cropped wig or pixie cut is going to last much longer than a shoulder length blow-dry.
Why? Think about how many times you fuss with your hair when it’s down. Whether your brushing it off your face or detangling it, the friction on the fibre causes wear which is why it’s important to look after your wig! Because of this I usually choose a more practical wig for day to day, something just above the shoulders, keeping the style simple but with a funky color to keep it glam! Another factor is how often you wear your wig and what you wear it for. Luckily I have a couple of wigs which I change day to day, however if you’re wearing the same wig repeatedly day after day then it’s only natural for your wig to eventually show signs of wear, and unfortunately it won’t keep that fresh L’Oreal blow dry look much after 6 months. To put a time scale on it, I would probably say your wig will last from anything between 3 – 6 months depending on the above.
Here’s a quick tip though . . . why not save that special wig for occasions, whether it be date night, girls night or even just of a weekend. Then keep the simple styles for a day in the office. I do this all the time, and every weekend I feel like a super model with glamorous locks! Or just try styling your wig in a ponytail, or fishtail plait. They’re super easy and can keep your wig staying fresher that little bit longer.
Is wearing a wig hot?
No, not all. I suppose at first it may feel a little bit different, but you get to a point when wearing a wig is just a normal part of your day and you can’t remember life before one. In some respects, wearing a wig is no different to having your own hair. Think of it like this . . . wearing your hair down on a hot summers day is going to make you feel warm and sticky and it likely your hair will stick to the back of your damp neck – but lets face it, that’s going to happen if you wear a wig or not. I often wear a particular style to try and avoid those kind of situations. But to put it simply, no it doesn’t make you feel hot if you’re wearing a wig on a day to day basis.
Do wigs come in different sizes?
If you’re a little bit experimental like me, then you will know that each brand of wig is different, and that the sizing will feel different on. In fact, there’s been a few times when I’ve questioned if I have an abnormally large sized head, but it just so happens wigs also come in petite (which I am not) and most wigs are adjustable to suit you! Don’t panic if this is all totally new to you. It wasn’t until I was about 5 years in, that I realized wigs came in different sizes. Luckily, I have some tips on how you can measure your head to make sure you have the best possible fit and feel as comfortable possible.
Here is another great article from the Simply Wigs team on how to measure for your wig.
Hi ladies, so sorry for the late reply! I think if I remember rightly this is the Ashley wig from Rene of Paris and it’s super affordable! Some of my favourite wigs at the moment are the more daring type. The Tessa wig from Rene of Paris is always my go to wig for any occasion or night out, I love this one because I get to embrace the fact that I wear a wig and can show off my silver hair! Hope that helps. Love steph x
Hi Steph, which wigs are your favourite? And which one are you wearing here?
Love this article and your new magazine blog. I suffer myself from alopecia and often wonder what style to buy and your new guide has helped me so much.
I oft wonder the length of life in a wig and now I know the time scale in which to save. I think I will need to buy 2 wigs as you say so I have an every day one and one for special occasions.
So much looking forward to the next magazine you are so avant gard. 🙂
Ps. What is this hair you have on? It is gorrrgeous!
Your wig looks great on. Fab article. What’s the style of the wig please, I’m looking for one that can be worn down or as a fishtail x
