We’re crossing our fingers for a long, hot, sunny summer here in the UK! For many, summertime means flaunting your lovely wig whilst enjoying the glorious temperatures, whether at home or on holiday abroad. But, as with natural hair and many other things, direct sunlight and hot weather can have an effect on your wig. To help keep your wig looking lovely and healthy, here are some top pointers on how to look after a wig during the summer!
5 Ways to Look After Your Wig in Summer
1. Minimise exposure to direct sunlight
We wait for it all year, but vast amounts of direct sunlight can cause damage to a synthetic or human hair wig. This isn’t just a wig thing, though, as sunlight can also damage and change the colour of natural hair. This doesn’t mean that you and your wig need to avoid sunshine at all costs, but consider taking a chic wide-brimmed hat or fashionable head scarf if you know that you’re going to be out in the sun all day. Both of these stylish accessories can protect your wig when worn over the top of it, whilst also providing your head and face with some lovely shade! This is really important for protecting yourself from the sun.
2. Store your wig correctly
Storing your wig properly is important all year round, but it’s even more important during summer. Making sure you store your wig in a cool place is a great way of looking after wigs during the summer months. This means avoiding placing your wig stands in sunlight, not allowing your wig to stay or dry outside, and making sure not to leave your wig in a warm car.
3. Wash your wig
Cleaning your wig or hair piece is essential for maintaining its look and feel, particularly throughout summer. You’ll most likely need to wash your wig more often than you would during the cooler months – as you can imagine, wearing wigs in the summer can be a sweatier affair! You should be able to feel when a wash is needed, and refer to our tutorials on how to wash a fibre wig and how to wash a human hair wig for advice on the best way to wash your wig! 5. Keep cool yourself!
As well as protecting your wig, it’s also important to keep yourself comfortable during summer wig-wearing. It can be a sweaty affair for everyone, but it can be even harder to cool the head down for ladies wearing a wig. A hot head is uncomfortable but can also increase the frequency in which you need to wash your wig.
As mentioned in our Wigs in the Summer post, when shopping for wigs to keep you more cool, consider short wigs, like bobs or cropped styles, if you have the choice. Less hair means less heat, and having some of your neck open can make the world of difference in keeping you nice and cool! (Check out our top five short wig styles for some inspiration!). Alternatively, you can tie your long wig up into a style that takes it away from your neck. Additionally, cap construction also influences your wig comfort during the summer months. Wefted wigs allow for better air circulation, which you will be thankful for during these hot temperatures!
With these tips for managing and looking after a wig during summer under your belt, you can wear your wig with confidence and know that you’re doing everything you can to look after it!
