I was 25 years old when my husband noticed my hair falling out.
He would find clumps of my hair in the shower and didn’t want to tell me. He later said that he didn’t want to upset me.
When I realised my hair was getting thinner and that I had bald patches, I went to the Gp and was then referred to the hospital. The specialist gave me steroid cream and I was due to attend a specialist clinic in Sunderland to start a treatment of steroid injections.
Sadly the treatment of steroid injections didn’t happen.
The steroid cream caused a bad reaction and all of my scalp came out in sores. On returning to the specialist his response was so cold ” well that’s it can’t do anymore , only thing for it you have to wear a wig and gave me a brochure for NHS wigs.
I cried so much. At the time I was working in retail management, then started my career with children’s social care. During this time I had been called many names. I was always described as the bald one.
My sister in law took me to see a wig specialist.
My sister in law took me to a wig specialist. I wanted to leave straight away but I am so pleased that I didn’t as this visit turned my life around. I bought my first wig which was a bold Red. I loved it.
My husband cried when he shaved the little bit of hair I had left and since then, no hair has grown back. However I have gained so much more confidence in myself and accelerated in my career. Best of all no one realises I wear a wig unless I tell them.
You are so blessed to have such supportive family to help you on your journey. I like the fact that you have got on with your life and made a success of it. Well done.
Elaine – your sister-in-law and husband both deserve credit. You were very young when your hair started to fall out – it’s always very difficult. Agree with your point about telling people – that is your choice and within your control. Great that a chose an over the top type of wig – as I did initially. When anyone compliments me on my hairware, my stock response is: “I spend a lot of money on it!”
Onwards …. Jan
Well done you and simply wigs. Simply wigs have turned my life round too. It helps when you’re depressed on losing your hair to have such a good choice of wigs that look so natural
