Discovering I Have A Rare Form Of Alopecia

Discovering I Have A Rare Form Of Alopecia

My hair loss started a long time ago. It’s difficult to say exactly when as it didn’t happen suddenly, but probably about thirty years ago, when I was in my mid-forties.

I started to notice that the hair at my temples was being replaced at intervals by a small fringe of new, short growth. First one side would go and then the other with the hair re-growing and then disappearing again. This process went on for a long time and I discussed it with my hairdresser who was as puzzled as I was. However, it became obvious over time that the hair re-growth was slowing, and my hairline started to recede.

Diagnoses and grief

I decided to get an allergy test to see whether my diet could be affecting the hair loss. The test came back with some of the usual suspects flagged – yeast, dairy, and cashew nuts among them. So, I started to modify my diet and spent a few miserable months trying to enjoy my life without proper bread, yoghurt and cheese.

When my hair continued to fall out, I asked my doctor to refer me to a dermatologist. At the appointment the specialist got very excited and called a colleague to look at my hair and suggest a cause. They both agreed that it was frontal fibrosing alopecia, a rare condition they had only seen three times before in Bristol. The specialist confirmed that there was no cure, it being a scarring type of alopecia, and that my diet had nothing to do with the condition. Strangely, walking away from the clinic I felt a sense of relief that I could return to my usual diet, the significance of the diagnosis not hitting me until later.

Much later, it happened. My private and business life was in upheaval at this time. The death of my father; my husband who was a recovering alcoholic, was drinking again; and our business was failing. At the same time, I had a routine breast scan and was recalled for a further scan. After my diagnosis with breast cancer in May 2007 and had a radical mastectomy that month. Not too long after my first dose of chemotherapy in July, my hair started to fall out.

My Wig Journey

My first wig was one that I found in the donated wig box at the hospital while receiving chemotherapy. The National Health wigs that I’d been offered were dreadful and this one wasn’t perfect. However I took it to my hairdresser who cut and thinned it for me. It was a short white wig, completely different to my medium-length, dark (but-greying) usual style. Once I’d gotten used to it, I really enjoyed wearing it. I had more compliments than I ever had in my life!

Once my hair started growing back my hairline had receded by about two inches. This made me think about how I was going to manage the condition. I consulted a specialist hair loss clinic and decided on a real hair wig, one that was stuck on by the clinic and that could be washed and dried by the client. However, caring for this was a lot more difficult and time-consuming than I wanted. At the same time, my husband had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014 and we were trying to sell our business. All in all, that period was a disaster. I decided to abandon the real hair wigs (which I now realise were not the best quality) and started to look for an alternative.

building Back Confidence

This was when I found Simply Wigs. I bought my first synthetic wig in February 2016, the Zara Mono Lace Deluxe wig in Vintage Snow by Gisela Mayer. My husband died in July 2016 and struggling to deal with the aftermath and complete the sale of our business, I was relieved that finally my hair was the least of my worries. Just to be able to pull the wig on in a morning and know that it looked great was fantastic!

I’ve bought many wigs since then and the customer care team at Simply Wigs have been so good at letting me return those that weren’t quite right and suggesting alternatives. I’ll never be totally reconciled with not having my own hair, but other hair problems seem rather common in my family, and I may well have ended up needing a wig without the alopecia.

My mother had male pattern baldness and my sister and cousin both have the same thing, my cousin finally deciding to go down the wig route herself. I introduced her to Simply Wigs and, after a self-conscious start, she now loves wearing her new wigs. As do I.
Love, Gillian x

Thank you for sharing your story. You truly have been through so much and still kind and caring enough to share your experiences with others. It is so inspiring to me. You look beautiful in your choice of wig the colour and style suits you well. I wish you many more happy wig wearing days.

Hi Gillian
Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
I resonate with so much you have shared.
You look great!I have recently discovered the ‘Blend’ wigs, which is a mix of human and synthetic hair.Personally I think they are super natural looking.
The price point is a bit higher but, in my opinion, they’re the most natural looking, and very easy to care for.
My current favourite is the Promise wig from Ellen Wille, but there are lots more out there to choose from.
I agree that Simply Wigs are so helpful. I returned lots of wigs when I first started my alternative hair journey after aggressive chemotherapy left me with significant permanent hair loss, and Simply Wigs were very understanding and helpful ?
To be honest, my alternative hair looks better than my biological hair ever did!
I am so thankful to have the option of having any hairstyle I choose.
Lots of love,
Wendy xx

Hi Gillian, thank you for putting into words, what has happened to you. I feel a bit of a fraud because I don’t have cancer and have only just mentioned my hairloss to a new GP. Various ‘magic’ hair products were tried before now and my lifestyle is healthier, less stressful. Still, I dont expect it to grow back. It’s not patchy, unless you include above both ears. And I feel my naked forehead looks like that of Elizabeth 1. Horrible, not me, I’m not ready for it! I believe you have been so brave, it’s admirable and you look so good! Thanks for describing how it developed and sharing your way of dealing with hairloss. I am glad to know about Simply Wigs, too! Just getting used to some different styles, too?

It’s so tough, isn’t it? But then, with the help of people like the Simply Wigs team, it’s finally resolved. I, too, enjoy the freedom of wigs; pop her on and off you go. Instead of a lengthy time spent zhuzhing what you have left into some semblance of normality. I think that’s a really hard part – especially if your hair was your crowning glory. You don’t want to stand out anymore, just look like a normal hairy person.

Wigs have given me back the opportunity to look soigne and pulled together. I’m glad that your journey has had a wonderful destination. Well done!

I think Gillian is a remarkably brave lady and I wish her good health and much love for the future.
She looks very beautiful in her wig and you’d never have guessed she was wearing one.
I lost my long thick hair after the first session of chemotherapy and it’s devastating. My hair is growing back now, but it’s not the same as before. I’m grateful it’s coming back though.
Stay strong and positive and remember to love yourself always.

I too have been told I have frontal fibrosing alopecia. I have had this now for 10-15 years.i have been on a gradual journey of sticking on hair! Clip on hair and then I found Simply Wigs. Such a wonderful Company, I tell all my many friends about their excellent service and offers. They are very patient with me
I have tried on bought and returned but they never complain. Easy to purchase, easy to talk on the phone to lovely people, easy to return. Excellent range to choose from, good offers and quick advice on request. Simply the very best Company. I am so very grateful.
My latest wig suits me so well, my friends tell me I look younger and more glamorous wearing it. When they comment I have always told them it’s a wig. Thank you Simply Wigs, you are the very best. Denise x

You look great. I have a similar “problem” and got a wig about 8 years ago. I’ve bought loads from Simply since then ( I have 16 at present) and vary my looks with my clothes. I tell anyone who’s interested enough that I wear them and get so many compliments on my hair. I wish all women could feel happy about wearing a wig, just like makeup. Enjoy xx
