Buying a wig for the first time can be incredibly daunting. Getting to know the wig terminology and knowing what to look for is a lot to take in when selecting a wig for the first time, which is why we’ve put together a list of things to remember when selecting a wig:
1. Style
Have an idea of what styles you like before you go shopping.
2. Wig Cap Construction
Think of the way you would like the hair of the wig to fall to help determine which wig cap construction to go for.
3. Complete Hair Loss
If you have complete hair loss, you may prefer a lace front wig to ensure your wig stays in place.
4. Hand Tied Wigs
These are great if you like changing hairstyles regularly.
5. Human Hair or Synthetic Wigs?
It’s a tough decision, but each has its benefits depending on your needs.
6. Cap Sizes
Choosing the right cap size will ensure your wig fits properly and comfortably.
7. Wig Cap vs No Wig Cap
Is your scalp sensitive and therefore could benefit from a wig cap?
Tips for What to Look for When Buying a Wig:
1. First of all, let’s talk style. When selecting a wig, you need to decide on the look you are going for. You might decide to choose a wig style that looks similar to the style of your own hair, or you might be feeling a little adventurous and seeking a new look. Either way, deciding on the colour and cut will help to start you off on your buying journey!
2. When you’ve decided on a style, this will help you to decipher which cap construction is best for you. If you prefer to wear your hair away from your face, a lace front wig allows you to part the hair on the wig wherever you like. This allows you to style the wig in a way that suits you best, helping you to feel more comfortable and confident in your wonderful new wig.
3. If you’re suffering from complete hair loss, it’s important to choose a wig that is going to look great and stay in place all day, while also remaining perfectly comfortable in the process. Again, lace front wigs are great for this. Most of our lace front wigs have a non-slip poly strip that is undetectably placed at the front of each cap. This ensures that your new locks are going to stay in place all day!
4. If you’ve always enjoyed experimenting with different hairstyles, hand tied wigs are great for allowing you to do this while remaining comfortable and looking effortlessly naturally. Hand tied wigs incorporate a soft mesh cap with each individual hair being hand tied onto it. The absence of wefts or mechanical stitching makes these wigs look wonderfully natural, meaning that you can style the wig in any way you like without compromising on its natural look!
5. One of the biggest decisions you need to make is whether to invest in a human hair wig or a synthetic wig. Human hair wigs are often seen as superior as they obviously feel and look like real hair, which often comes at a greater price. However, it is important to remember that you can now get synthetic wigs that look wonderfully natural. Understanding the pros and cons of both types of wigs will help you to determine which is right for you!
6. Cap sizes can be a little confusing if you haven’t experienced wigs before. But don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple. Cap sizes come in Child/Petite Petite, Petite, Petite/Average, Average, and Large. Our wig size guide goes into more detail about the measurements of these, but the vast majority of our customers are an average cap size. Choosing the right cap size will ensure the best fit of your wig, for maximum comfort and a natural look.
7. Another decision you need to make before purchasing your wig is whether or not you need a wig cap. This is largely personal preference, but a wig cap is particularly great for those with a sensitive scalp as it acts as a protective barrier, helping to keep your wig secure and comfortable throughout wear. As wig caps aren’t costly, we recommend purchasing a pack and trying them out for yourself. Remember, the most important thing when purchasing your wig is making sure that it is going to be comfortable!

Where are your shops ? And do you have one in or near Suffolk?
I wasn’t aware that there were different cap constructions when it came to wigs! My sister has lost a lot of hair recently. A wig would help boost her confidence, but I’m not sure what kind of cap she would prefer. I do know that she wants the wig to look like natural human hair.
Couldn’t agree more! Going into my fourth year of wig wearing I am limited to two styles due to being a mini-petite. . I did try having an average style which was altered by a professional but as I have a small, narrow head it’s never felt really comfortable and I’ve only worn it on a few occasions. The children’s wigs are by nature child’s hairstyles and not that suited to adults.
I would so love the choice of other styles and having the option of changing looks helps to make me feel special again
You talk about petite wigs but, as a seller, you must realise the choices in proper petite sizes are abysmal, and i’m begging you, on behalf of my mum and her petite bald head, please please please, get on to the manufacturers and pester them to provide more choice in petite, even just the option to order a petite even if you have to wait a month for it (though don’t know if you’d be able to offer this then in Fab Friday deals). So many of the petites are the very short styles, or bobs, and if not those, they are the expensive brands that you don’t do Fab Friday deals on, and as a long term alopecia sufferer, myself and my mum, those deals are essential to our being able to afford hair to make us feel good (and I always feel so good when my new wigs arrive from you, yes I will feel fabulous today!). The manufacturers need to be pushed and fabulous wig shops like yourself will know the demand, or can find out from your customers. It would be so good to see Rene of Paris brands, Racquel Welch and others with more variety in proper petite wigs that you can put in your Fab Friday deals and glam up my mum’s hair wardrobe to be more like mine from ordering frequently from you. Thanks for all you do for all of us who have to suffer hair loss.
