The unforeseen challenge of coping with sudden hair loss

The unforeseen challenge of coping with sudden hair loss

Upon turning 50, I was hopeful that my middle life would be an adventure. I pre-empted the many challenges posed by the increasing responsibilities and also imagined enjoying the benefits that come from a life well-lived.

However, I didn’t plan on the unforeseen challenge of coping with sudden hair loss, which in my case, was caused by contracting Covid. My hair loss hit its maximum within a few months and challenged all my self-perceptions. The fact that I hadn’t had to go to the hospital with Covid and was well enough to be at home with my loved ones made me count my many blessings. In reality, I was extremely lucky.

I remained positive enjoying life, trying to work around my thin and patchy hair by wearing scarves and hats. This worked well but I really missed having a hairstyle so to speak. I was never any good at creating a hair-do, it was more a matter of piling my long hair up on my head into, a messy bun, but all the same, it was very much an identifier of who I was.

Feeling stuck in the scarf world, I eventually happened by chance upon a social media wig lady who lead me onto the many other wig enthusiasts who share tips, tricks and new styles available. I lapped up any good advice I could find online. It was through this route I realised that modern wig constructions were a world away from the imagined horrors I had conjured.

After a few months, I purchased my first two wigs, which weren’t a total success, mainly due to my colour choices. I still enjoyed wearing them and loved the positive comments, but felt like I hadn’t yet found ‘the one’. Then I saw a review of a rather edgy asymmetrical wig in a rooted modern grey/silver – it was love at first sight!

I haven’t looked back since finding my colour and style. It was the first time I had achieved perfectly wonderful preened hair, in a style I loved, which wasn’t compromised by the limitations of my own bio hair. I’ve even had a hairdresser tell me my cut and colour is gorgeous. I didn’t have the heart to tell them the truth! I now own three of the same wig in varying shades but sometimes flirt with a few short styles when I want a change.

Losing my hair was and is still sad at times but in all honestly I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s been such a fun journey and I’m now the ‘shake and go queen’ of the synthetic wig. It is exciting to know that I’ve only just dipped a toe into the world of wig possibilities and so who knows what’s next. All I am sure of though is I’ve never felt or looked better, which isn’t half bad for a middle-life woman who’s looking for adventure.

Love, Melinda x
