Winner ONE
Whispers
Whispers in the classroom,
A pointing finger and a stare.
Would they be so cruel,
If it was them losing their hair?
Kids can be so cruel they say,
I know, they really tried.
They nearly broke me when the last strand fell,
Something inside me died.
But that was then and this is now,
How the tables have turned,
I wish I could tell that crying girl,
In twenty years how much she’ll have learned?
Learned to ignore the whispers,
Learned to ignore the stare,
She wouldn’t have her hair back if you paid her now,
She really couldn’t care.
Wigs in so many colours, purple, red and brown,
Each a different style,
Each one her glorious crown.
So, if you’re suffering hair loss,
Pay no heed to other’s cruelty,
Dive into the world of wigs,
And find your newfound beauty.

Winner TWO
The Journey
The journey began many years ago.
I was a busy mum of three.
Living in the hope that the journey would end
With my hair restored and my dignity.
It became a journey with stops and starts,
Many obstacles to be sure.
With wig disasters and feelings of despair
So many years without answers or a cure.
What is alopecia? I had no idea.
How could an immune system attack my hair,
Or make a person lose their identity and belief?
Surely that’s not fair!
Shampoo, injections and treatment with a lamp
The journey continued with acceptance and hope.
Knowing research for answers is still going on,
Gave me the strength to cope.
Along the journey came shopping online!
Their wonderful support helped me to get by.
With friends in plenty, I no longer feel alone
I know I’m still me! I hold my head up high.
Beautiful wigs and beautiful ladies
Who are vibrant, confident and strong.
Thank you for your inspiration and courage,
The journey still goes on.

Both beautiful poems and touching words.
