A Thankful Whisper | My Story About Overcoming Alopecia

Honestly, I never share much about my hair loss. I will answer any questions as briefly and politely as I can, but I tend to leave out everything that comes close to being “emotional”.

I never offer anything about the shock, the trauma, the insecurity, the broken dreams about regrowth, or the continuing struggle to figure out which wig is right for me (and this does sound easier than it actually is, right?!).

I guess the strategy not to divulge was my coping-mechanism. If I didn’t talk about it, maybe it wouldn’t hurt as much. As unhealthy as that might sound, it worked for me. And then one day I came across a Facebook post, where someone asked very openly “when will the emotional pain stop?”. I found myself compelled to answer honestly about my own experience. Without really noticing it, I had reached a point where I had come out on “the other side” of the trauma and had enough energy to help someone else. Someone who seemed to be drowning in her sorrow.

I truly do think that one can drown or at least lose yourself in the pain. If nothing else, then lose the one you used to be. In another connection, I once heard someone say that it takes two years to get through a deep sorrow or mourning (not in relation to death, though), and looking back at the time my Alopecia Universalis set in, it did take me two yrs to rid myself of the pain. It took two years to swim back to a shore where I was able to rise above the sorrow and realize that I might be a different person, but that I still loved everything about my life. Of course, it’d be nice to get my hair back, but I’m confident that I’m just as happy now as I would be with biological hair.

Come to think of it, I have never encountered anyone in this business who was not kind, helpful, inspirational, understanding, professional, and talented. They’ve all understood that I like myself as a blond. And not always a “natural blonde”, but also bleached, curled, you name it. It was accepted and they helped me make dreams come true. They are very much the reason that I don’t think of myself as sick or disabled in a sense. I didn’t give in to the sorrow because someone helped me see an alternative.

This might sound a bit “too much”, but how could it not be? This is about survival. Perhaps not physically, but emotionally and mentally.

My life would not be as happy a life without my beautiful hair, and for that I’m thankful!

Thanks for sharing, I can relate to your journey. It’s interesting that you describe going through hair loss as trauma, I’ve never thought of my own hair loss journey as traumatic, but looking back now it most definitely was.
