Can a viral infection cause your hair to fall out?

Can a viral infection cause your hair to fall out?

Who Knew? Who knew that having a viral infection could cause your hair to fall out? Who knew that it would fall out three months after you’d been really ill? Who knew that it might grow back – or it might not? I didn’t know any of this until March 2024. This is my story…

We went away for Christmas and New Year – and had a great time, fortunately. But within two days of arriving back in the UK, I was ill. Not life-threatening thank goodness – just very poorly for a month.

In March/April, I noticed my hair was falling out in clumps. It’d fall out whilst I was washing it and then again when I was drying/brushing it. Don’t worry about it everyone said. Easier said than done! The doctor said I had something called ‘telogen effluvium‘ – rapid hair loss caused by stress or a change to your body. Your hair should grow back she said because the roots were still present. Everyone at work said that it just looked like I’d had it cut short – to me it looked and felt, awful!

So I decided to go to a local wig salon. But that was a soul-destroying experience. I cried afterwards – 99% of the wigs they showed me were brown, had no fringe and looked like wigs once plopped on my head. I was used to being a bleached blonde woman, with a fringe who hated wearing hats – let alone wigs that looked like wigs!

Anyway, I came home and went on the internet. In one panic-buying session, I’d spent over £400 on five wigs – a bargain I thought. They looked great in the pictures but turned out to be a Chinese website that sold shocking wigs. (Thank goodness I’d paid by credit card.)

Nine months later, here I am with my own ‘Wig Room’ as my fella calls it! Buying fantastic wigs from reputable companies like Simply Wigs is my new addiction.

My hair has grown again, but it’s ‘steel grey’ as my hairdresser calls it. Not bleached again and may never be. I think I will always wear wigs now. Perhaps not all the time, but it is a fantastic way of changing your style and still looking great. Thanks to all those at Simply Wigs for making the whole experience more enjoyable!

Love to you all, Gill x

Anima wig by Ellen Wille Changes Collection – is a fabulous beach wave style, but with a difference. The waves have a razor cut finish to them, so the overall shape looks edgier.

  1. Dear All, I was in shock on reading about this Viral infection …… this was so real I’m now 74 and this happened to me back in 1957, I was very ill with Asian flu and German measles, Both me and my mum nearly died. The year before I was under the doctor as he said I’d started with patches of hair loss saying it was alopecia and prescribed some ointment to use.
What I’ve just read was Me going through all this attending the hospital for years to follow having my head painted, steroids given doctors say they didn’t know why this was happening as my roots of hair were healthy but my hair didn’t grow, and never has.
So pleased I’ve now found Simply Wigs I’ve always struggled in the past I’ve had wigs made (NHS) until I met an old school friend she said don’t wear them anymore look into buying from Wig saloons she had to start wearing them and never looked back.
My problems always been I struggle to find Petite fit as I’ve been told I do have a small head size, Now I’ve Simply Wigs I feel more relaxed. Even after all these years I keep my Secret ?

  2. I think most of us can admit to wig addiction, especially in the early days of discovering how great they are! When our hair isn’t right we can slip into a ‘why bother’ mode. I can remember thinking what’s the point of getting dressed up when my hair was such a mess. I have TE but mixed with alopecia so no prospect of regrowth sadly. You look great in your rooted blonde style Gill.

  3. Thanks for sharing your story, your new ‘hair’ looks lovely & suits you, very natural. Like you I had difficulty finding the right colour, I was brown/grey & did not want to go all grey. Simply Wigs, just the best. Wigs may soon become my new shoe addiction !

  4. I completely understand that feeling of being unhappy with your hair despite everyone saying you look fine. I’m so happy you have found your place at Simply Wigs – I couldn’t agree more. You look so healthy and beautiful. Go Gill and your “wig room” xx
