How to Choose Male Wigs That Look Real

How to Choose Male Wigs That Look Real

For decades, Simply Wigs has been empowering our community of female wig wearers to reclaim their fabulousness by finding the perfect wig to suit their personal style, but did you know that we have a collection of realistic wigs specifically for men? We appreciate that buying a wig for the first time can be daunting, and we are well aware of the stigma surrounding male wig wearers, which is why we have put together this guide to support you through the process.

In this article, we will break down how to choose a male wig that looks real, discussing the different types of wig construction, as well as how colouring and style contribute to how realistic your men’s wig looks.

Which Types of Male Wigs Look Real?

You would be forgiven for assuming that male wigs made from real hair would have the edge on synthetic wigs, but in reality, there are multiple factors that contribute to how realistic a men’s wig looks. From the choice of materials to the construction of their wig caps, there are numerous styles of men’s wigs that offer different aesthetic benefits to the wearer. These include:

Lace-Front Wigs

As their name would suggest, male lace-front wigs feature a thin layer of lace at the front such that the wearer can blend the hairpiece with their forehead to achieve a realistic hairline. After trimming the excess from the front, what little lace remains is practically invisible to the naked eye, allowing you to wear your wig combed back without drawing attention to the hairpiece.

The Reserved Wig from the HIM Collection is an excellent example of the styling freedom that male lace-front wigs give their wearers. Even when its fibres have been coiffed, leaving most of the forehead visible, the lace front completely disguises the hairpiece while creating a convincing hairline.

Monofilament Wigs

Taking their name from the sheer material used for their wig caps, monofilament wigs have fibres sewn into their caps to mimic how hair grows from the scalp, creating natural movement throughout the wig. This makes monofilament wigs incredibly versatile when styling, as their fibres can be parted in many different directions to achieve a look similar to your natural hair.

The Classic Wig from the HIM Collection demonstrates how this construction elevates the realistic appearance of this men’s wig, its fibres sweeping across the hairpiece with the same variation present in natural hair.

Top Tip: When styling with heated appliances, such as straighteners and hair dryers, you must be very careful as it is very easy to permanently damage synthetic fibres with these products!

Hand-Tied Wigs

Similar in their construction to monofilament wigs, the fibres of hand-tied wigs are individually woven into the wig caps to achieve their natural appearance. While the visible differences between sewn and hand-tied monofilament caps are barely perceptible, attaching the fibres by hand minimises the number of seams for a more comfortable fit and more even layering across the hairpiece.

The George Wig by HAIRforMANce shows how the hand-tied technique can be used to achieve an effortless windswept style that looks so real, even you could forget you are wearing a male wig should you catch your reflection!

Synthetic Wigs

Although human hair wigs are made from natural hair, synthetic male wigs can look more realistic due to the style retention of their fibres. During the construction of synthetic wigs, their fibres are chemically treated such that they return to their original shape after washing or exposure to humid or wet weather. Simply shaking the strands of a synthetic wig while wet encourages them to fall back into place, making these realistic men’s wigs among the easiest to style.

The Bradford 2.0 Wig by HAIRforMANce has been intentionally left longer and asymmetrical at the front for this very reason, giving it a messy, natural look that might be difficult to achieve with a real hair male wig.

How to Choose the Right Men’s Wig Style

For some men, losing their hair can feel like the prime time to reinvent their style, experimenting with lengths and colours they might never have had the confidence to try with their natural hair. At Simply Wigs, we commend the bravery of our community and are committed to supporting every customer through their wig journey. That being said, if you want to achieve a real look with a male wig that resembles your natural hair, you may want to consider the following factors:

Wig Colour

Matching the colour of your wig as closely as possible with your natural hair, eyebrows, or skin tone is crucial to making it look more realistic. While you might think going a shade lighter or darker than your natural hair might not be noticeable, warmer and colder complexions have a higher contrast with black or blonde wigs, respectively, which could draw more attention to your new look.

Wig Style

Much like wig colour, the style of men’s wig you choose should aim to replicate the length and texture of your natural hair if you want your male wig to look real. Whether your natural hair was long or short, curly or straight, our wig collection contains wigs of every conceivable colour and style, so you are sure to find one that recaptures your former glory.

  1. I have tried many male wigs, with putting out countless money and I can never find one that doesn’t feel like it is cutting into my scalp, can someone please guide me. I have been bald for about 18 years due to cancer. Someone please guide me. Thank you for your time and help.
