I don’t let hair loss affect my life

I don’t let hair loss affect my life

I have Androgenic Alopecia but I don’t let it affect my life. I had obviously heard of alopecia but after my diagnosis of androgenic alopecia, I had to look up exactly what it meant. Evidently, it primarily affects men and hair is lost on top and at the front of their heads. For me as a woman, it is typically a thinning across the entire scalp.

My problems started in my 40s. I was in a changing room looking at the back of a skirt to see how it fitted, in the changing room mirror I saw my scalp showing through on both sides of my head. After that, I was always very conscious of what people could see when they were sitting behind me. I hated going to the hairdresser as everyone else came out with lovely hair, mine was a make-do style to try and hide any bald bits. The hairdresser put me off buying a wig by saying they were extremely expensive and very difficult to maintain. I only found out later that she was so wrong!

I used various products to try and cover up my scalp but the fine powder spray just ended up all over the bathroom and I couldn’t go out in the rain for fear of it running down my face and neck. It was also costing me a fortune in hairspray. I finally got fed up with how much time it was taking me to do my hair every morning and I always hated how it looked anyway! I took the plunge and bought a duo fibre Gisela Mayer “Abbey” wig.

Since then I have never looked back or ever had a bad hair day. I don’t even have hat hair anymore. Just a quick shake and I’m ready to go. I now have 3 wigs in this style. They are all the same colour but I have had them cut differently by a specialist hairdresser. I came for an appointment with Simply Wigs when I was thinking of trying a different style. I felt so at ease there and was able to try the wigs on to help me make up my mind.

As I have a recognised medical condition, I don’t even have to pay VAT on my wigs. I had several questions in my mind and I am sure others will have these questions. Will everyone notice and stare at me was my first one. The answer was no.

I was complimented on my new hairstyle but nobody’s eyes strayed up to my hairline. How will it feel was another one. I was self-conscious for the first few outings but then I forgot about it. My main worry was windy weather. It was unnerving the first couple of times but it stayed exactly where it should have. My wigs are so easy to maintain with the special shampoo and conditioner products. It’s just a case of washing, conditioning and then putting them to dry on a wig stand and then when dry, just brush and go.

I decided to put a picture of myself and my new hair on my Facebook page and I explained why I had bought a wig. My sister immediately went out and bought one. She said she had been thinking of doing this for some time and loved my transformation. 2 of my friends said they would now be confident about buying a wig in the future as they too had the same hair loss gene. All the comments from my friends were complimentary and I felt this was such a good way to prepare people for my new look.

Lots of love, Alison x

  1. Thankyou, reading your story as prompted me to do something about my thinning hair. Been so depressed about it.
    You’ve given me hope.

  2. So lovely reading your story. For years I dreaded going to the hairdresser for the very same reason. It was only by losing my hair during chemo that I ventured into buying a wig. I’ve never looked back and am always getting compliments!

  3. Well said . You look great . I too wear wigs from Simply Wigs . So much choice . I wear Connie Sally and just bought a Ellen Wilie shirt light weight . Confident now when I go out . Hated that feeling noticing people staring at my very thin hair showing g a shiny scalp . Especially on sunny days .
