My mum took me to the doctor because my hair was very thin and patchy. I was about ten years old and desperately wanted thick hair like my friends! The doctor suggested that I might have alopecia nervosa and should just go home! and left us to it saying it will grow back.
ALOPECIA NERVOSA – Stress-related alopecia, is a condition in which hair loss is attributed to emotional and psychological factors, rather than genetic or hereditary causes. Nowadays, rush, stress and nerves are the order of the day, and we do not realize that this has a direct impact on our hair health.
I went through my teenage years and twenties hating everything about my hair. It was so thin you could see my scalp and bald patches on the top and sides. I became an expert on wearing my hair up all the time to cover the patches. I even bought a crisper to make it thicker (when brushed it did a little).
Over the years I have tried hundreds of over-the-counter products and nothing ever worked, and cost me a small fortune. The stress of having it tied up all the time took its toll on the condition of my hair. It started to split and snap off to the point when I couldn’t cover the scalp anymore.
I then decided to bite the bullet and found a wig shop in my local town. It was an ‘okay’ experience, as the ladies were really understanding as they were a lot older, but the wig styles were a bit old-fashioned. They sold a vast range of wigs by different makers which I tried several on.
Then I found a shorter wig made by Dimples. It was constructed with a silicone band on the front and a monofilament top to replicate your own scalp. I was amazed at how realistic it was, and I decided from then on this was my way forward. In fact, it made me cry as I looked normal in the mirror. Unfortunately, the shop no longer exists, but I have now found Simply Wigs.
The wig I wear now and have done for the last 20 years is Dimples New Roma in different blonde colour ways. I wish I had found Simply when my journey began.
Thank you Simply Wigs crew and all the lovely people who have gone through the loss of our lovely locks.
Love from, Trish x
Thamkyou for this post. You look fabulous.xx
Trish, your hair looks amazing and although I usually can detect a wig ( from experience) I would pass this one as your natural hair. It really suits you and looks great. Thank you for sharing your experience. I always knew that autoimmune diseases such as alopecia can be triggered by severe and ongoing stress so if possible we all must try to eliminate it if at all possible.
Wishing you well in your journey.x
You look lovely and so natural. Xx
So glad this lady found simply/wigs,as I am too. My life journey has been exactly the same with alopecia, spending a lot of money on wrong choices of wigs, with no help or understanding.
The staff at s/wigs are just what we need.
Lot’s of thanks and love to them xx
Hi Trish. My alopecia definitely started during a period of great stress. Once it took hold my hair never did recover though progress towards wig wearing was slow. I’ve now been a happy wig wearer for several years and these days popping my wig on is no different to putting on my specs. It’s just part of my daily routine. I honestly couldn’t be bothered with going back to trying to style my bio hair any more. You look great in your choice of wig.
Trish, you look absolutely beautiful in that wig, it’s so completely natural.
I too have alopecia (universalis)
It came out last oct/Nov, and no sign of growth. I have had breast cancer twice, and carry a faulty BRCA2 gene, which I have passed onto my youngest daughter and I think the worry and stress have contributed to my loss of hair combined with other factors.
My hair grew back each time after each chemo, but I have cried so many tears since my first hair loss in 2016.
However, I try to be grateful for all the lovely things there are in life.
Trish you look absolutely amazing, beautiful. This is SO natural looking on you, I love it! Thank you for sharing your story and your beautiful photograph x
Looks great x
It looks brilliant Trish, so real, i also have alopecia but mine is universalis, and struggle to find a wig that looks, to me, natural, although others say different.
I have three wigs, two from simply wigs one not yet worn as not sure about it yet.

I have always had very fine hair but over the last few years my hairdresser told me I had a bald patch and then I lost hair to the front of my head. I felt very self conscious and hated anyone taking a photo because I didn’t want to see it. Then I found Simply Wigs and I have not looked back. Now I put my wig on first thing in the morning and take it off last thing at night. I can now go out and about without feeling ashamed of my awful hair, I feel like everyone else now. Thank you all so much.
