How to Wear Wigs with Glasses

When it comes to wearing wigs with glasses, there are a few considerations you should take into account for a comfy and fabulous result.

1. We recommend measuring your head properly so that your wig is the right fit. If your wig is too large, it won’t sit properly on your head, and the ear tabs may come down too far and interfere with your glasses.

2. One of the most common ways to wear wigs with glasses is to wear your glasses underneath your ear tabs. By neatly tucking your glasses underneath the tabs, your glasses are likely to feel snug and secure.

3. Alternatively, you can wear your glasses on top of your ear tabs. Some wig wearers find this more comfortable and feel more confident that the look and fit of their wig won’t be compromised.

TOP TIP – If your ear tabs have metal stays, you can push them up slightly and create more space for your glasses to sit comfortably. Or, if you have open ear tabs, you can thread your glasses through the small opening in your ear tabs for a secure fit. However, remember not to force your glasses through; otherwise, you risk breaking them.

What Wig Type is Best for Wearing Wigs with Glasses?

When wearing glasses with a wig, it’s important that you find a comfortable wig in terms of how it feels on your head and how well it supports your glasses. Here are examples of the best kinds of wigs to wear with glasses:

Open-weft wigs

Our top tip for wearing wigs with glasses is to choose a wig that has an openweft construction. You can gently tuck your glasses through the wefts for security, and they’ll sit neatly behind your ears. Open-weft wigs are an affordable wig option, and the weft construction keeps your head cool. The stunning Sky Noriko from Rene of Paris wefted wig is a fabulous option for styling with glasses or sunglasses. More of our wefted favourites include:

Monofilament wigs

You can also try a monofilament wig for pairing with glasses. The main body of a monofilament wig is wefted, and the top uses a sheer, soft monofilament fabric for an extremely natural look. These wigs tend to be a little pricier; however, you have more freedom with styling.

Additional Tips for Wearing Wigs with Glasses

  • Experiment!
Experiment with different methods to find out which is most comfortable for you.
  • Add security
Use a small amount of wig tape to secure the arm of your glasses in place. You can also use wig clips or combs to keep your wig in place and minimise slippage when wearing glasses.
  • Ensure the right fit
Take your glasses to an optician to be adjusted after wearing them with your wig. This may improve the fit when wearing wigs with glasses and is often a complimentary service.
  • Select a suitable wig style
Remember to select a wig style that enables your glasses to be positioned comfortably. For example, avoid wigs with strands directly at your face’s sides and be careful with bangs. Don’t go overboard with volume around your ears and temples.
  • Choose your frames
Think about the frame of your glasses – a thin frame will offer you more room to work with, but it may be more susceptible to damage.
  • Consider how you wear your glasses
If you often wear your glasses on top of your head, consider choosing an arm’s length that’s a millimetre or two longer than your usual glasses. This will help your glasses to cope with the added volume from the wig without stretching and potentially damaging them.
  • Don’t give up!
The feeling of wearing wigs with glasses will always take a little while to get used to, so don’t abandon a method on your first go.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for wearing glasses and wigs together. You shouldn’t have to compromise when wearing wigs with glasses, so experiment until you find a method that makes you look and feel fantastic.

  1. Like Janet I wear both hearing aids and glasses. Found a frame with the smallest stems that I could and still not comfortable. Would appreciate pictures on how others have solved this.

  2. I’ve found with shorter wigs where the ‘sideburns’ area is shown, to manipulate the ear tabs as far as possible and put the glasses over the top. This can make it look like your ears are sticking out a bit though, as there is extra ‘width’ to your head where the glasses are sitting over the hair.

If you have a longer wig, even just a short bob where the hair is longer at the sides, I have found that you can tuck the arms of the glasses under the ear tabs. Feels weird at first, but fits to your head a lot better and doesn’t show.

I have the Audrey and Bailey wigs from Rene of Paris/Noriko and this works well with them. I also have shorter styles Lizzy and Pam, and whilst those might be more like my ‘old’ hair, the glasses are definitely more comfortable with the longer styles.

  3. Hi, I had a big issue with body dismorphia
. When I discovered wigs I discovered a new world! I love them and would recommend to anyone. It’s amazing to be able to have the time to get on with life not spending hours in the mirror trying to get my own hair to behave. I have a friend who keeps saying I’m wrong and should be embracing my own hair but I don’t like my own because it is coarse. I have it short and it’s ok but I am more confident by far in a beautiful wig!

  4. It hadn’t struck me that wearing glasses with a wig would be an issue nor hearing aids! I need both glasses and hearing aids and am exploring wigs because of female pattern hair loss – more complicated than I had thought. A timely article – advice would be really welcome
