I don’t know about you, but I’m always fascinated by the names of my wigs. Some are quite simple: Poppy or Jane. Some are intriguing: Jazz or Evanna. And then there’s the mystery of Coco or Kai. How are names decided? Who decides? I find it all quite intriguing!
My name is Irene, and I have Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia. I have decided to wear wigs. I don’t think I look great in a headband and thanks to the kindness and patience of the staff at Simply Wigs generously giving advice, I feel more confident and happy going out wearing Tatum, Poppy or Stop Traffic. As my hair will never grow back, I’ve decided not only to wear wigs but to have fun with them. I always have a good hair day!
Not long ago, I read T.S. Eliot’s poem ‘The Naming of Cats’ and it prompted me to think about the names of my wigs. So, here is my poem based on this:
The Naming of Wigs
The naming of wigs is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games:
You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a wig must have three different names.
First of all, there’s the name Simply Wigs use daily,
Such as Tori, Poppy, Sue Mono or James,
Such as Jolie or Meadow, Brad or Miss Hailey–
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Grit, Opulence, Mercedes, Erika–
But all of them, sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a wig needs a name that’s particular,
A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can she keep her style spectacular,
Fabulously flattering and be worn with pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Stop Traffic, Alexi or Rosenzig,
Such as Debbie Deluxe, or else Decorum-
Names that never belong to more than one wig.
But above and beyond there’s still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no hairdresser can discover-
But THE WIG HERSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
After ‘The Naming of Cats.’ T. S. Eliot.
SW Team says – ‘We just LOVE this piece of work and thank you Irene for taking the time to write such a wonderful poem’
Lovely poem ! Well done you
I started wearing wigs a couple years back ‘ ive been on chemo and radiation over the years ‘
But my hair had remained thin ‘
I wear wigs to make me feel more confident and also I like the different styles ‘ I’m a petite which is a pain .
But people still say to me why are you wearing a wig there’s nothing wrong with your hair’ well nowadays you don’t have to have NO hair it can be a fashion statement or whatever you like !
Hello Pauline, Angela & Kathy,
Thank you for your kind words. Hair liss of any kind certainly isn’t a breeze but, we have Simply Wigs in our arsenal and so we can look and be as fabulous as we want to be. Wishing the SW team and my “wig sisters” a happy holiday.
