The stigma of wearing a wig is long gone

The stigma of wearing a wig is long gone

My hair has always been very fine and flyaway. As a teenager, I tried everything to give the illusion of thicker hair – 80s perms, highlights, backcombing and so much hairspray!

By my mid-thirties I’d discovered hair extensions and finally, I had the hair I’d always dreamt of; long, luscious locks that I could wear in any style I liked. However, by the time I hit my forties, I noticed my hairline becoming more noticeable and my hair just felt different. My mom had lost most of her hair at the crown by the time she was 60 and I feared the same was beginning to happen to me. Despite kind assurances from friends and colleagues that my hair “didn’t look any different” I knew I was on a downward spiral.

A dermatologist finally confirmed my fears. I had androgenetic alopecia. I was devastated, my hair was my confidence and without it, I wasn’t sure how I would function. I didn’t feel attractive and was convinced everyone was looking at my scalp. But I wasn’t beaten yet, and during the lockdown, I did quite a lot of research into various solutions and stumbled across Simply Wigs.

To say these hair toppers have transformed my life would be an understatement. Not only do they look natural, they feel natural too. My hairdresser is so impressed she now recommends them to all her clients with thinning hair! Even my dermatologist had no idea I was wearing a hairpiece until I unclipped it to show him my scalp.

It was at that point I knew that friends and colleagues were not just being kind when giving me compliments, they genuinely had no idea it wasn’t my own hair. I honestly don’t know what I’d have done without Simply Wigs.

My hair continues to get thinner, in spite of supplements and minoxidil, so I now wear a slightly thicker hair topper and at some point, I may have to invest in a wig. But I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. I’m totally open about my condition, I’m not embarrassed at all to be wearing a topper, and my hair has never looked so good! And I can go out in all weathers, a quick comb and it immediately bounces back into shape. Amazing! Wish I’d discovered them years ago.

The stigma of wearing wigs and toupees is long gone, everyone seems to be wearing them, even those with healthy scalps. My husband has never been so happy, it takes me half the time to get ready now I can just clip and go. I don’t fear losing my hair anymore because I know Simply Wigs will have the perfect solution for me whatever the outcome.

Would love to hear your story!

Love Alison.
