Read our wig cap guideBuying a wig for the first time can be an exciting experience, but it's important to consider a few key factors to ensure you make the right choice.
Buying a wig for the first time can feel overwhelming, but you do not need to understand everything straight away. Start by thinking about the style, length and colour that will help you feel most comfortable and confident. You should also consider whether you would prefer an easy-care synthetic wig, a heat-friendly style or a human hair wig.
Getting the correct cap size is important, so measure your head before ordering and check the individual wigâs sizing information. Look at the cap construction too, as features such as a lace front, monofilament top or hand-tied cap can affect the wigâs appearance, comfort and price.
When choosing your first wig, read customer reviews, watch video demonstrations and ask for advice if you are unsure. A specialist wig retailer can help you compare colours, fibres, cap designs and styles without putting you under pressure to buy.

A hand-tied wig is a type of wig construction where each hair strand is individually hand-knotted onto the wig cap. This method offers a highly natural appearance and greater flexibility in styling compared to machine-made wigs.
The key features of a hand-tied wig can include:
- Fully Hand-Tied Wigs: The entire cap is hand-tied, providing the most natural movement and flexibility. This allows the hair to move freely in any direction, which enhances the wig's realism.
- Partially Hand-Tied Wigs: Combines hand-tied sections with machine-made wefts to offer a balance of natural appearance and affordability. Common features may include a hand-tied top or crown with wefted sides and back.
The benefits include:
- Very Natural Appearance: Because the hair is hand-tied, it appears to come directly from the scalp. This makes the wig look very realistic.
-
Comfort: The cap is usually made from a lightweight and breathable material, making it comfortable to wear for long periods. Suitable for individuals with sensitive scalps or those experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions.
- Versatile Styling: Allows for more versatile styling options, as the hair can be parted in any direction. You can change your hairstyle without worrying about exposing the wig cap.

From sleek straight bobs to softly layered styles, a bob-style wig can be a lovely choice if you want a classic shape that feels neat, feminine and easy to manage.

You will need a cloth tape measure. If you have any hair, push back the hair so there's no added length or volume. Start at the centre of your forehead where your natural hairline is, and you are going to measure the circumference. Drop behind the ears, to the nape, and then back up around the opposite side of your head meeting back at your starting point.
And don't worry if your head circumference measures in between the average sizes as there are adjustable straps at the back of each wig to ensure a perfect fit.

Cleaning a synthetic wig is a relatively straightforward process, but it's essential to do it gently to avoid damaging the fibres. Only wash your synthetic wig with aftercare products specifically for synthetic wigs. Detangle the wig gently. Fill a sink of lukewarm water and put some shampoo in the water. Gently swish the wig and leave immersed for between 5-10 mins. Rinse and then repeat with the conditioner. Pat the wig and then leave to dry naturally. Always read the instructions on the shampoo & conditioner bottles, as instructions may vary from different suppliers.
By following these steps and using gentle care, you can keep your synthetic wig clean and look its best for many 'wears' to come. It's generally recommended to wash your synthetic wig every 7 to 10 'wears', or as needed based on how often you wear it.
