FAQs
A hair piece is a partial hairpiece designed to work with the hair you already have, rather than replace it completely. It can add length, volume or coverage wherever you need it most.
There are lots of different types, from clip-in ponytails and buns for instant updos, to fringes for a quick style change, extensions for added thickness, toppers for the crown and parting, and three-quarter wigs that blend with your own hairline.
Hair pieces are a simple, flexible option and a great place to start if you're not ready for a full wig. Our guide to buying hair pieces is a helpful introduction.

The main difference is simple: a wig covers your whole head, while a hair piece works with the hair you already have.
Because hair pieces blend with your own hair, colour matching is especially important. The benefit is that you keep your natural hairline, making them lightweight, cool and quick to wear.
A wig gives full coverage and doesn't rely on your own hair, which can be helpful if your hair loss is more widespread or you prefer a complete change. Our guide to wigs or hair pieces for thinning hair explains the differences in more detail.

More than most people expect. Hair pieces come in a wide range of styles, each designed to solve a different need.
Clip-in pieces include ponytails for instant length and fullness, buns and chignons for easy updos, clip-in fringes for trying a new look without cutting your hair, and scrunchie pieces that simply wrap around your own ponytail.
There are also hair extensions for added length and volume, hair toppers for coverage at the crown and parting and three-quarter wigs for more coverage while keeping your natural hairline visible.
Many styles are available in both synthetic and human hair. Our guide to buying hair pieces explains the options and which type may suit you best.
Start with where you need the extra coverage or volume, as this will help you choose the right type of hair piece.
Thinning at the crown or parting is usually best suited to a topper, while a clip-in fringe can help with coverage around the hairline. If you don't have enough hair for a fuller ponytail, a ponytail piece can add instant volume and extensions are ideal for adding thickness throughout the hair.
Once you've chosen the type, focus on finding the right colour match, fibre and attachment method.

Most hair pieces are secured with clips, which are simpler and more secure than they might first appear. Small pressure clips or crocodile clips fasten onto your own hair to hold the piece in place. A ponytail piece usually wraps and clips, a fringe often uses two or three clips, and toppers typically have three to six.
Some hair pieces use comb attachments and wig tape can be a useful alternative if clips feel uncomfortable or you don't have much hair to grip onto.
The key is making sure the attachment feels secure without putting unnecessary tension on your hair. Our guide on how to attach a hairpiece securely explains the process and ways to secure a wig covers alternative options.

Yes - many people wear hair pieces every day, including clip-in fringes and toppers.
The key is to look after both the piece and your own hair. Remove it at night, vary where the clips sit so you're not gripping the same strands every day and avoid fastening them more tightly than necessary. Storing your piece properly will also help prevent tangling and keep it looking its best.
If you notice any tenderness where the clips sit, try adjusting the position or consider an alternative attachment method. If you need advice, we're always happy to help.
The best choice depends on how you plan to wear your hair piece.
Human hair pieces are ideal if you like to heat-style your hair, as you can straighten or curl the piece alongside your own hair for a seamless finish. They also have a softer, more natural feel.
Synthetic hair pieces are lower maintenance, hold their style after washing, are lightweight and generally more affordable. They're a great choice for occasional use, such as ponytails or buns.
If you're wearing a piece every day and want it to blend closely with your own hair, human hair can be the more forgiving option. Our guide to synthetic vs human hair explains the differences in more detail.

Yes - hair pieces can look incredibly natural because your own hairline does the hardest part of the work.
The key is choosing the right match. Colour needs to blend closely with your own hair and texture matters just as much. A straight hair piece over naturally wavy hair, for example, is much harder to disguise.
Look for pieces designed to blend rather than sit on top of your hair. Features like longer, softer edges on clip-in fringes help the join disappear into your natural hair.

Yes, you can. You have two options. You can either braid your hair and then wrap the braids around and towards your crown. Or you can tie your long hair into a ponytail and then clip it towards your forehead. Finally, secure your hair by wearing a wig cap.
